This season, pitch traditional flower girl baskets and help the little ones look just as elegant and timeless as you, the blushing bride, and your beautiful bridesmaids.
"The trend this year is going more toward … the little girls carrying more of an arrangement," says Dana Christiansen, manager of Walter Knoll Florist. One of Christiansen's favorite options is a kissing ball-also called a pomiander ball-which is an orb covered in flowers that is held by a looped ribbon. Generally, the flowers coordinate with the rest of the bridal party.
According to Jenny Thomasson of Stems Florist, spray roses work best, but the price can be up there. She adds that daisies also add an extra touch for garden weddings. "It depends on kind of what the setting of the wedding is," Thomasson says, but, "roses really make the best ones."
While pomiander balls are hot-ticket items this season, Christiansen says that flower girls do still carry baskets. Many ceremony sites, however, do not allow flower girls to toss petals; some compromise and allow silk petals. Thomasson agrees, saying that this restriction has led to the trend of placing a floral arrangement in a satin-wrapped basket.
For one intimate wedding, Christiansen says that, because the ceremony site would not allow the flower girl to drop petals, the flower girl carried a loose bouquet and presented family members with solitary flowers.
If baskets and pomiander balls just aren't for you, have no fear. For her brother's wedding, Thomasson says that she created a pomiander ball for the end of a scepter for a flower girl to carry. Christiansen says, "Sometimes, we've done weddings where there's two flower girls that walk down." She said that, in this situation, she has created garlands for the girls to carry. Thomasson adds that wreaths are making a comeback, as they signify another aspect of unity in a marriage.
Finally, to make your flower girl really feel like a princess, complete her look with flowers in her hair or even a floral halo.
If you're worried that your favorite flowers won't be available for your flower girl vision, don't fret. Christiansen says that no certain flowers are in season more than others. Lily of the valley and peonies are always popular, but Christiansen stresses that if you want something bad enough, your florist can make it happen.
