Options for professional teeth whitening:
Professional bleaching kits start at $250 for a take- home kit. Impressions are taken to design a tray that is filled with gel to be worn overnight for two weeks. "During this time, plus one additional week, food and drinks that stain teeth should be avoided," says Lisa Eichorn, certified dental assistant at Boain Dental Care. "Sensitivity in teeth can occur with any whitening treatment and will pass in a few days."
"Zoom" those pearly whites:
Zoom is a professional whitening system that uses lights with the bleaching; it costs approximately $500. "The process is done in three cycles that take about 20 minutes each; total time is approximately three hours," says Eichorn. "When the bleaching is complete, the customers are given their trays and additional gel for touch-ups at home. Food and drinks that stain teeth should be avoided for at least 48 hours after the Zoom treatment." The Zoom treatment lasts about three years. An at-home touch-up is usually required about every three months. "When you need more gel, just come by the office," says Eichorn.
Over-the-counter products:
These products will remove some superficial stains. However, some people experience tenderness at the gum line because the generic tray designed to fit most bites allows the gel to creep onto the gums. "Sensitivity in teeth to hot or cold can occur with any whitening treatment and will pass in a few days," says Eichorn. "Over-the-counter strips usually only cover the front six teeth; a professional treatment bleaches all the teeth."
Keep your teeth their brightest:
"Remember, if it will stain your T-shirt, it will stain your teeth," says Eichorn. "Your teeth are like a sponge. After whitening they are porous, and saliva helps to close the pores."
